MR. JORGE RAMIREZ

PRESIDENT, CHICAGO FEDERATION ON LABOR

RECIPIENT OF THE AMERICA COMPETES AWARD FOR PUBLIC SERVICE, MARCH 2013

As the son of a Mexican immigrant labor leader, Jorge was acutely aware of the critical importance that labor plays in communities across the nation.  Under his guidance, the Chicago Federation of Labor and Local 1546 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union have become organizations recognized for paving the way in the effort to bolster employment for union members across the state.  It is no wonder that Chicago Magazine named Jorge one of the most powerful 100 Chicagoans.

Embracing public service, Jorge is a pivotal leader in the broader community.  He has demonstrated this in multiple ways with histenure at the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls Board of Regents, the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago Board of Directors and the ARISE Chicago Board of Directors, among many other boards and commissions.  This investment not only benefits the local community, it inspires others to cooperate, to pool their talents, and to become leaders themselves.
